The park was established in 1960 and recognized by UNESCO 1981 as world heritage sites covering the area of 124 square miles (320 square km), including about 89 sq miles (230 km2) of lake surface.

The park is found in Northern part of Tanzania lying between Arusha and Manyara regions, more than 350 bird species have been observed on the lake including large number of pink flamingos, Apart from a spectacular setting, the park is famous for its unusual tree-climbing lions and the vast elephant herds it was established to protect. The park possesses an abundance of wildlife and the best flora and fauna in the region.
